1. Introduction
DockMe ApS is seeking proposals from experienced firmware engineers or training providers to deliver a tailored, hands-on training program in embedded firmware development, focused on our hardware platform based on the Nordic Semiconductor nRF microcontroller.
This procurement is funded through the Beyond Beta program and is administered by DigitalLead and EHHS. The objective is to ensure that our internal team acquires the practical skills necessary to maintain, update, and optimize our firmware solution independently, thereby reducing reliance on external consultants.
2. Project Background
We have recently migrated our custom hardware solution from the ESP32 platform to the Nordic nRF-series chipset. Our hardware solution includes an nRF microcontroller, e-ink display, radar sensor, and cellular modem. Communication is based on NB-IoT/LTE cellular connectivity, and cloud communication is handled via MQTT.
While the current firmware is functional, further optimizations and development are needed. The change in platform and the adoption of new connectivity standards has created a knowledge gap regarding the toolchain, architecture, best practices for the nRF platform, as well as secure, robust IoT connectivity.
The project owner has a foundational understanding of C programming but requires structured, practical guidance to gain proficiency in the specific tools, libraries, connectivity protocols, and workflows relevant to the nRF environment.
3. Scope of Work
The selected supplier will deliver a customized training program, including the following elements:
a) Platform Introduction & Toolchain
Overview of Nordic nRF architecture
Setting up the development environment (nRF Connect SDK, Zephyr RTOS, etc.)
Build system and debugging tools
b) Firmware Architecture & Code Walkthrough
Detailed review of existing firmware
Key components: display drivers, radar sensor integration, cellular modem connectivity
Special focus on NB-IoT/LTE communication and MQTT protocol integration
c) Hands-On Exercises
Practical code modifications, builds, and deployments
Live debugging sessions on actual hardware
d) Best Practices & Documentation
Guidance on modular, maintainable code
Version control and documentation routines
e) Mentorship & Q&A
Scheduled Q&A/support sessions
Ad hoc advice on advanced or unforeseen topics
Delivery Format
Training must be based on our actual hardware (nRF MCU, e-ink display, radar sensor, cellular modem, server setup)
Remote delivery is acceptable
Timeline
The training program should be delivered flexibly over approximately 2–3 months, with regular sessions (frequency to be proposed by the supplier)
Expected Output/Deliverables
The applicant is able to independently maintain, update, and optimize firmware for the specified hardware
Step-by-step documentation and/or learning materials tailored to our platform
Final assessment (e.g., a practical exercise or test) to ensure knowledge transfer
4. Budget
The maximum available budget is 43,000 DKK excluding VAT. The total cost must cover all preparation, delivery, and support related to the training program.
5. Supplier Requirements
Documented experience with Nordic nRF firmware development
Demonstrable experience with IoT connectivity, specifically NB-IoT and LTE
Experience implementing and troubleshooting MQTT
Experience with C programming, Zephyr RTOS, and relevant toolchains
Demonstrated experience in teaching, training, or mentoring in embedded development
References from similar assignments are desirable
6. Proposal Content
Your proposal must include:
A brief description of your relevant experience and qualifications
A proposed training plan/schedule, including delivery format (online, in-person, etc.)
A list of anticipated topics/sessions (may be adapted based on our needs)
Total price (all-inclusive, in DKK)
References or testimonials (if available)
7. Selection Criteria
Proposals will be evaluated on:
Relevant experience and references
Quality and relevance of the proposed training plan
Price/value for money
8. Submission
